Pasquale's talent show

I had to make do with a telephone interview with comedian Joe Pasquale, but it was an enjoyable experience because he was prepared to answer most of my questions fully and frankly.

One thing he did not talk so freely about was his attempt to swing the voting in his favour while appearing as an unknown on television talent show New Faces in 1987.

His high-pitched voice seemed to go even higher as he admitted that a little help from several hundred new 'friends' put him on the way to stardom.

Joe later made a 'full confession' when appearing on ITV's 'The Talent Show Story' - 25 years after the event.

He said: “Before I went on 'New Faces' I was a bingo caller and refereed wrestling at a holiday camp, so I had nothing to lose.

“One of the judges was Ken Dodd and he gave me advice on how to improve my act. I did what he said and won the heat.

“I then needed to win the postcard vote to reach the final. I was still working at a holiday camp where we had about 400 people staying each week. I bought a job lot of 5,000 postcards and dished them out to guests after I had filled them in. All they had to do was stick a stamp on and post them.”

Joe gave a sly grin as he added: “Whether they sent them in I don't know, but I got through on the viewers' votes.”
